Orban hails Turkey’s local role, diplomatic efforts
At a joint press briefing in Istanbul, Orban recalled Erdogan telling him that a new global landscape is taking shape and that the Turkic community is poised to gather significant strength. He said he recognized a broad and ambitious vision embedded in the idea of a "Turkish century."
Earlier, the Turkish president welcomed Orban ahead of the seventh session of the Türkiye-Hungary High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council.
According to statements made at the event, the Hungarian premier voiced appreciation for Türkiye’s attempts to help conclude the Russia-Ukraine conflict, calling Erdogan "the only successful mediator" involved in the effort. He emphasized that Budapest does not see a military solution and believes that peace must ultimately be negotiated.
Orban also highlighted positive expectations in political cooperation, energy collaboration, economic engagement, and joint defense industry initiatives. He noted that Hungary has long valued its connection with the Turkic world and continues to participate as an observer in the Organization of Turkic States.
Reports said he also thanked Erdogan for Türkiye’s migration policies and pledged that Hungary would advocate in both Brussels and Washington for wider recognition of Ankara’s role.
Commenting on energy matters, Orban stated that Hungary has agreed to maintain its supply of Russian gas due to limited alternatives. He expressed gratitude to Türkiye for facilitating the transit and delivery of natural gas.
He added that Hungary received a one-year waiver from U.S. sanctions last month for its use of Russian energy sources. Orban further noted that 7.5 billion cubic meters of natural gas has been transferred from Türkiye to Hungary so far this year via the TurkStream pipeline.
