Turkey denounces Israel’s acknowledgment of Somaliland
A spokesperson for Türkiye’s Foreign Ministry said the decision represents "a new example of the Netanyahu government’s unlawful actions aimed at creating instability at both regional and global levels."
The spokesperson further stated, "This step by Israel, which continues its expansionist policies and spares no effort to prevent the recognition of the State of Palestine, constitutes an open interference in Somalia’s internal affairs."
Türkiye emphasized that any determination about the future status of Somalia and the Somaliland region should be made in a way that reflects the collective will of the Somali people.
Reiterating Ankara’s position, the spokesperson underscored Türkiye’s commitment to stability in the Horn of Africa, stressing that the country firmly backs Somalia’s territorial unity and will continue to support the Somali population.
Earlier on Friday, Israel formally announced its recognition of Somaliland as an independent state.
Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991 but has never received international recognition. Despite functioning for decades as a de facto separate political, administrative, and security entity, the region has remained outside formal statehood, with Somalia’s central authorities unable to reassert control and Somaliland’s leadership failing to gain global acknowledgment.
The Somali government continues to reject Somaliland’s claim to independence, insisting the region remains an inseparable part of Somalia and regarding any direct engagement with it as a breach of national sovereignty and unity.
