Turkey condemns Israel’s recognition of Somaliland as “unlawful”
In a statement shared on a US-based social media platform, a Turkish Foreign Ministry representative said Israel’s action represents “a new example of the Netanyahu government’s unlawful actions aimed at creating instability at both regional and global levels,” as stated by officials.
The spokesperson added, “This step by Israel, which continues its expansionist policies and spares no effort to prevent the recognition of the State of Palestine, constitutes an open interference in Somalia’s internal affairs.”
According to Turkish officials, any determination about Somalia’s future and the status of Somaliland should be made in a way that genuinely reflects the collective will of the Somali population.
Türkiye emphasized that it places significant importance on stability and peace in the Horn of Africa and reaffirmed its strong backing for Somalia’s territorial unity, stressing that Ankara will continue to stand alongside the Somali people.
Earlier the same day, Israel formally acknowledged Somaliland as a sovereign and independent state.
Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991 but has never obtained international recognition. Despite this, it functions independently in practice, maintaining its own administrative, political, and security structures, while Somalia’s central authorities have been unable to reassert control over the area. At the same time, Somaliland’s leadership has failed to secure formal international acceptance of its statehood.
The Somali government continues to reject any claim of independence by Somaliland, regards the region as an inseparable part of Somalia, and considers any direct engagement or agreements with it to be a violation of the country’s sovereignty and national unity.
