Turkey-Iran Parliamentary talks focus on regional stability
Kayhan Turkmenoglu, a lawmaker from the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) and head of the friendship group, met with envoy Mohammad Hassan Habibollahzadeh and his delegation at the Turkish Grand National Assembly (TBMM).
The talks came amid ongoing demonstrations in Iran, which began in late December over the sharp decline of the national currency, the rial, and worsening economic conditions. According to a statement posted on the social media platform X, the meeting focused on the trajectory of these social developments in Iran and their possible implications for peace and security in the region.
Turkmenoglu emphasized that Türkiye and Iran are longstanding neighbors sharing not only a border but also mutual responsibilities regarding security and stability. He stressed that maintaining internal peace, social harmony, and political stability in both countries is essential not only for national security but also for border security and broader regional stability.
“Strengthening stability in Türkiye and Iran will directly contribute to lasting peace in our region,” Turkmenoglu said. “Developments in our neighbor Iran should be closely followed not only in terms of domestic dynamics but also with regard to the peace, security and stability of our region.”
He further noted that relations between the two countries are grounded in historical and neighborly ties, adding that parliamentary dialogue and friendship groups play a key role in sustaining relations based on mutual understanding and constructive engagement.
