Turkey Backs Sudan’s Unity, Supports Efforts to End Conflict

(MENAFN) Türkiye’s ambassador to the United States reiterated Ankara’s firm backing for Sudan’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity on Tuesday, emphasizing support for regional and international initiatives aimed at ending the ongoing conflict.

During remarks at an event organized around the Sudan Humanitarian Fund at the US Peace Institute in Washington, DC, the ambassador stated, “Türkiye reaffirms its strong support for Sudan’s unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity, which we consider critically important for the stability of Sudan and the wider region.”

He stressed the importance of dialogue and diplomacy as the most effective means to resolve the crisis, adding, “We believe that the most effective way for ending the conflict is dialogue and diplomacy. We support regional and international efforts aiming to end the conflict.”

The gathering, hosted by the US State Department’s senior advisor for Arab and African Affairs, was attended by senior officials from the United Nations, the US, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, the UK, France, and other nations.

The ambassador highlighted that Türkiye’s primary goal amid the ongoing conflict is to alleviate suffering among the Sudanese population and assist local authorities in addressing urgent humanitarian needs. He noted that Türkiye was among the first countries to deliver humanitarian aid following the outbreak of hostilities.

Sudan has been engulfed in a deadly conflict between the national army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) since April 2023, resulting in tens of thousands of deaths and the displacement of millions. On Oct. 26 last year, the RSF reportedly seized El-Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, committing atrocities against civilians, with warnings that such assaults could deepen the country’s geographic divisions, according to local and international sources.
