Turkey Tightens Social Media Rules to Boost Protections for Young Users

(MENAFN) Türkiye has rolled out new regulations for social media platforms aimed at improving safeguards for children and young users online, aligning itself with several countries that have introduced similar digital protection measures.

The updated framework is focused on boosting child safety, increasing responsibility for online platforms, and enabling quicker action against harmful or dangerous content circulating on the internet.

Under the new rules, individuals under the age of 15 will be barred from creating accounts on social media services. Companies operating these platforms will be required to introduce reliable age verification systems to enforce this restriction.

For users aged 15 and above, platforms must provide tailored services designed to be more appropriate for different age groups, ensuring content and features are adjusted accordingly.

The regulations also place greater emphasis on parental oversight. Social media providers will need to implement tools that allow parents to control account settings, manage or approve purchases made within apps, and monitor or limit the amount of time children spend online.

In addition, companies will be expected to take stronger action against misleading or harmful advertising, as well as reduce exposure to risks that particularly affect minors.

The new framework also introduces strict requirements for rapid response to dangerous content.

In situations involving national security or public safety, large platforms must comply with official orders to remove or block access to content within one hour.
