Bridgewater Hires New Police Chief

Following the retirement of Chief Phillip Read in July, the Town of Bridgewater announces the selection of his replacement.  Effective August 31, 2026, Steven Cason, currently a Lieutenant in the Augusta County Sheriff’s Office (ACSO), will serve as the Town’s Chief.

The Town received interest from sixteen applicants, providing the search team with a strong pool of candidates.  The search was led by Town Manager Jay Litten and senior members of the Town staff. After reviewing resumes, contacting references, and conducting interviews, the team selected Cason as their top choice.

Litten said, “We were impressed by Steven’s record, of course, but also by the way he goes about intentionally building positive relationships.  He sees personal relationships with citizens as central to policing a town.  And he sees personal relationships with officers as central to managing a police force.”

In Augusta County, Cason is the Criminal Investigations Division Commander, leading a unit of seven officers.  He has nearly twenty years of experience as a law enforcement officer, having served in both Staunton and Charlottesville before joining the ACSO.  He has been recognized for his service with several awards including the Virginia Homicide Investigator of the Year in 2017 in addition to the Sheriff’s Commendation and three Supervisor Commendations in the ACSO. A graduate of Fort Defiance High School in Augusta County, Cason also holds a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from Liberty University. 

Having spent years in leadership, Cason believes that “investing in people is one of a leader’s greatest responsibilities.” He will be committed to “fostering a culture of professionalism, innovation, accountability, and exceptional public service” among officers.  As Chief, Cason plans to be present in the community and to be accessible to residents as well as actively engaged with businesses, schools, and organizations.

“I enjoy getting out and talking with folks,” Cason said. “I look forward to being a part of this community.” 

Having grown up near Bridgewater in Augusta County, Cason now lives with his wife and two daughters in Fort Defiance.  When he is not on duty, he enjoys golf, is an avid whitetail deer and turkey hunter, and cheers on the Virginia Tech Hokies.

“I am excited to take on a leadership role with an established department.”  Cason said regarding his appointment.  “My goal is simple: build trust, support our officers, listen to our community, and provide professional and fair police services every day.”
